Notes: The course was reconfigured from 3-5 years ago when it was very flat, but this year’s version was much better for marathon trainers. As Jen Feaster explained, “…they were required to make the change a few days before the race due to safety concerns, at the direction of the Marblehead police.” And as Vernon Turner said postrace, “The true definition of rolling hills. Everyone should be happy with the work they did today – it will pay off in April!” And were there really free Bloody Marys after the race?

Let me know if your result’s not above and you did run this, or if there’s an error in your time, pace, place, age, GP pts, etc.

OFTM

OFTM (TEN miles!) 2/17/2019; 11 a.m., Foxboro; low-30’s, sunny, dry;
course not all that hilly (except for Miles 8-9) if you both trained and tapered for it. Ted (& Mary Tyler too?) took 834 photos of race – on Jimrhoades.com

The 5 up there who also did the 5K – did it to be part of the “BADASS HALF”!
Ted Tyler’s pics of us (he took 834 or so of the race) from Sunday’s OFTM (That’s Old Fashioned TEN MILER) showed Scott Pettingell doing his 6:49’s, Bob Cargill, 60, 8:56’s (4th in age group!), Lincoln Merrihew, 57, doing 9:01’s, Eric Jacobsen, more of a trail runner lately, pavement-pounding 9:03’s, and we think that’s Katya Divari, 57, also most often a “rocks & rootster”, bravely doing 9:31’s on this hard pavement! More pics to come! Scott, Bob, Lincoln, and both Katya Divari, and Michelle Schatz (in next photo grp) also did the 5K. They did it to be part of the “BADASS HALF”! Scott did his 5K in 6:14’s, Bob 8:01’s, Lincoln 8:41’s, Katya 8:39’s, and Michelle 9:25’s.
In the 5K, Mary Tyler was the only one of us down there to win anything
at either distance. Mary was 3rd in the 5K! Ted was 5th, but no cigars (They don’t smoke anyway!).

Race notes: Abby said pre-race she hadn’t been running that much lately, but still got a tall (10″ ?) trophy for 2nd in her tough age group; John Joyce was FTLY by :19 (only 3 secs slower than yours truly was at one year older but John was 6/12 in his age group as opposed to my 3/12 back in 2008; Darlene Dearden was just 6 seconds from winning a trophy for 3rd in age group, and her mile pace in this 5 miler was only ONE SECOND slower that in her New Year’s Day 5K, so…must be improving! Esther Powell is still coming back from giving birth to Andrew in August, and, with work hours high every day, has been running only one day a week since then – on weekends! Her longest run since then has been only 6 miles. Vernon Turner was only a day off a long training run for Boston; Rebecca White ran her first GP race of this Series; Jim Finn (FTLY by 1:02, successfully “snuck by” me at ~3 miles), was also running his first, and said he’s been running almost every day and doesn’t dare let up; I (Tom A) had run my legs for only 2 days of the previous 12 due to 13 stitches in my back for minor surgery, so was 3 1/2 minutes slower than last year here; missed getting a trophy for first time in 7 years. Katie Scafidi brought her mother – and current member – Mary Blaney-Sullivan (who had run with us in the Strivers 5K two or three years ago), to race with; Mary Tyler, despite some recent health maladies, picked up her 2nd consecutive (3rd?) trophy for 2nd woman over 70; and Ted – 4 seconds behind – made sure she kept going! Best “fellow runner support award” should go to Abby and John for coming back after finishing and “escorting/exhorting” me to run faster the last half mile. (It really helped!) Vernon and Abby later took some nice post-race photos of us.
“FTLY” means Faster Than Last Year at this race.

Tot 519.

There are maybe GFRC finishers that I didn’t notice on the first scan-through. Racewire doesn’t include town/city names (even though it does on the printout at the race), so that makes it harder to narrow down who’s a GFRC member.  Tell us at GrandPrix “at” gfrcrun.org if you were in this but not listed above.

Race Notes: Edw Ginsberg lives nearby and runs here often – but he didn’t use any shortcuts that we know of! Abby McCabe has been doing Wednesday Bowditch workouts whenever it’s open and getting in 7-milers on Sundays – but missed both with this past week’s weather. Susin Carlson did fine despite being in heavy marathon training. Esther Powell is on the comback trail and was 17 secs better here than on New Year’s Day. Mary Bahl started way back among the 10-minute crowd for some reason, then really turned it on, averaging 9:12’s. I was happily surprised when belatedly awarded my last year’s 3rd place Cancer Survivor’s trophy – complete with a generous Marathon Sports gift certificate. Katie (nee Sullivan) Scafidi is back racing with us again! (had been last seen at the Larry Olsen 10K) Ted & Mary Tyler had just gotten back from racing in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 65-degree race temps. Ted told Edw Ginsberg prerace, “I’m going to pass you in this!” But Edw never saw Ted pass at only 1/4 mile into the race. Sneaky! Karen Bilodeau was a minute faster than in her New Year’s 5K. Mike Carlson took some good group photos.

New Years Day 5K

Needham’s New Year’s Day 5K

11 a.m, 53 degrees, strong, gusty wind; Needham YMCA, Great Plain Ave.; raffle, food goodies, hot choc, coffee, no awards, but Racewire lists by 10-year age groups; goodie bag included MITTENS (rare) for first 300 entries with race name on them. 792 PHOTOS by Mary Tyler of us running are on “Jimrhoades.com[space]results”. Many more of us postrace by Bob Cargill and Vernon Turner on Facebook.

658 Tot

– POINTS for ONLY ONE GP RACE per MONTH are counted towards your total; if you run a marathon, half-m, or ultra, then the points for any one of those are to be used IN PLACE of that month’s GP race points – unless that race’s pts are higher.
– Age-graded time is done for the exact year (with 2 decimal positions) of racer’s age, rather than by the 10-year age division the runner is in, calculated on WMA website, choose correct distance (e.g., “5 mile road” if a road, not track, race); fill in other appropriate fields, separating hours, minutes and seconds by colons; Ages are calculated to one one-hundredth because there is often such a closeness in age-graded times that a finer age-graded computation than 2-digit ages is more accurate. Plus, you get a faster age-graded time this way!

Notes: John Joyce was faster than last year here by 55 seconds, Bob Cargill by 28 seconds, Darlene Dearden was 6th of 90 in her age group. Others faster too, despite the wind. Watch this page.

GP rules say that points can be waived for someone if he or she requests it. This is done sometimes so that others’ points will be raised.

Natick’s 9th Annual Jingle Bell Run

Sunday, December 2, 2018, 10 a.m., Brown School, Natick; flat course through neighborhood, only off-and-on faint drizzle, 40-45 degrees, no wind, slightly less than 2 mi – and race officials have since declared that they made the course short – to 1.85 miles – because of that long, road-wide puddle at the original start. So essentially it was a 3K!  I’ve adjusted the paces accordingly (it’s been a 30-50 seconds difference for everyone); long, generous raffle, age group awards 1 deep (mug with kisses)

Tough Ten 10-Miler

November 25, 2018, 9 a.m., start and finish in a Marlboro CC parking lot across road from where we had our banquet 6 years ago. VERY hilly in stretches, a steep one for most of Mile 1, 2-3 in miles 4-5, and especially the “super longie” from Mile 7.5 to Mile 8.9? Water stops, mile splits called out for first few miles (incl 5K) and corner guides aplenty. Weather: only at times a very faint drizzle, 45 or so degrees, no wind. Postrace refreshments: choc chip cookies, bananas, Clif bars, GU Gels, clementines. Race put on by Highland City Striders – low key, but very well organized.
