Notes: Kudos to Karolyn Welch and Carol Leiter for winning their age groups! Carol’s time was also a “modern era” PR for her!; Note Bob Mayer’s and John Joyce’s WAVA%’s!! Anything above 70 is “Regionally competitive”; (more to come soon!); more kudos to Bob Mayer for being faster age-graded than last year here – by 0:08! Same for Amy Pearl (age-graded time) by 0:16! And Mark Goldschmidt was straight-out faster than last year here – by 0:66!

Notes:
Abby McCabe had – the very day before – placed 2nd
(54:26 – 8:45’s over rks & roots! ) among 26 women in the TARC 10K trail run; Jay Powell continues to improve – 1:21 faster on a tougher course than his last year’s Purple Passion time; Susin & Mike Carlson were ramping it up for the BAA Half; I (T.Abbott) labored to an all-time, 36-year Personal 5K Worst by 0:58 (had some sort of hip problem); Mike Gannon still coming back from bone fractures; Carol Leiter earned her 1st trophy as GFRC member, and in that narrow, first 1/8 mile uphill start, she said she kept getting trapped behind walkers going abreast! Probably many others of us had that problem. (I’ll try to remember to tell everyone next big race to start up near the front.) Just missing a medal were Ted Tyler and Amy Pearl (both 4th); Ro (Roberta) Hagopian did her first GP race that we know of. Jackie Judd (had a PR!), Drew Giovannini, and Karen Friedlander – orig Couch to 5K’ers – are continuing their GP racing! “FTLY” (Faster Than Last Year) were Ted Tyler – by 2:50, and Amy Pearl – by 0:07, and Mark Goldschmidt was MUCH faster – by 4:12. FT2017: Ted Tyler by 7:06, Mary Tyler by 2:12; FT2016: Chad MacDonald by 0:46, Joanne Liburd by 5:21; FT2015: Sue Richardson by 0:16; If anyone ran this who is a current GFRC member but isn’t listed above, let me know here.

Purple Passion 5K

Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, 8:18 a.m. start – at end of Bishop St.; medals for 5-year age groups, 1 deep; weather: low 60’s, sunny, dry; course: except for steep Dennison St. hill, basically entirely flat; results and further pics by Racewire.com. See 200 photos of racers by Ted Tyler; others by Bob Cargill.

Nine returnees from last year’s 24; also nine from 2107’s 18 GFRC’ers
John Joyce had a 75.02 WAVA%; Esther Powell pushed Andrew in stroller whole way; Carol Leiter didn’t finish, lost ear bud; Mike Bower had taken off 20 lbs, with 8 to go; Tom Abbott’s pulled sacroiliac prevented much running the previous 12 days; Vernon Turner just coming off injury since March; Judy Levine was also faster by 0:33 than in 2017 here. Bob Cargill took numerous pics to post on FB; Ted Tyler got pics of everyone at 1/8 mile and at finish, and are on JimRhoades.com

Tots: 377 in 5K, 223 in 10K (last yr: 295 & 118)
WAVA% is % of world record for exact age for that distance for each participant; 10Kers above were Bo Brown, Michelle Schatz and Sam Lehardy; Bob Mayer said 5K course registered 3.25 on some GPS watches; Bruce Hardy the day before did heavy yard work (hadn’t gotten the memo); Bo Brown’s sons (members last year) each have done sub-2 minute 800’s in college; Michelle Schatz, in her 2nd 10K ever had a nice PR; Ted Tyler almost over flu symptoms we think. As for me, T. Abbott, my legs had no pop at all for the entire course, but it wasn’t a PW at least! Did anyone have an age-graded PR? Let me know, as we might start keeping track of these.

Mile and 200 Meter Challenge (14th Annual)

Notes: Ted Tyler was just getting over a summer flu, but still geared himself up enough to take photos of everyone running the mile (after running/walking it himself in an official early Start). Mary Tyler had other ongoing medical problems but still took other photos; Bruce Hardy traved all the way from his new Quincy digs to do both the fastest mile and fastest 200 meters, but Arnie Pollinger still had the best 200m age-graded time (26.53) in this GFRC event as he has done consecutively for what – 11 years now?! Bob Mayer had the highest WAVA% – a 77.65 in the mile! (‘Course he’s a young 63!); new member Carol Leiter, 71, ran her first mile-on-a-track race and her first 200 meter race ever – so of course each is now a personal record! Anita Yip also ran PR times – 39.02 in 200m and 7:33 in mile (after first 200m at 5:30 or so pace!) Abby McCabe was our first woman in both the mile (6:14) and 200m (34.43), but was edged out age-gradedly by both Rong Hu (53) and Darlene Dearden (43) – see their fine stats above. FOUR were among the original participants in the original 2006 Mile & 200 Meter Challenge: Arnie Pollinger, Sue Ericson, Ted Tyler, and Tom Abbott.

Notes: Tri Valley FR had publicized this race, so a few particularly fast types showed up; Bob Mayer had a 76.95% WAVA and Scott Pettingell had a 72%; Bob Mayer and Abby McCabe switched finishing positions from last year here, new member Carol Leiter of Wayland had a 5K PR, Erin McArdle was both well trained and well rested after wisely skipping a planned half (VT) last weekend because of the record heat, Mike Bower was only 1 1/2 days rested after a prior 5K, Mary Tyler had a knee problem with the “flat” hilliness. Abby was 2nd of 19 in her age group, Jen and Jeanne 1st & 2nd of 9, Scott 2nd of 10. Was that pre and postrace music great or what?! Judy Levine showed a couple of dance steps; Couch to 5K graduates Jackie Judd and Andrew Giovannini got in their 2nd GP race of this Series. …Grand Prix points for a relay is 20 points minimum
…In the 12-month Grand Prix Series starting in June, GP points for only ONE RACE PER MONTH are awarded, and they would be for whichever race you ran produced the higher (or highest, if 3 races) points for that month. See the Grand Prix Rules for how to substitute a marathon, half-marathon or ultra race (>32 miles) for a race in any particular month. Just by dint of being a GFRC member, when you run a GP-selected race, GP points are calculated for you and added to your total for the Series.
…Age-graded time is done for the exact year (with 2 decimal positions) of racer’s age, rather than by the 10-year age division the runner is in, as calculated on WMA website. Ages on this are calculated to one one-hundredth because there is often such a closeness in age-graded times that a finer age-graded computation than in 2-digit ages is more accurate. Plus, the farther into your year of age you are, more time is taken off and therefore the faster your age-graded time is! YOUNGER RUNNERS might not like this at first, but it is used so that all club members have a fun way to compete against each other. OLDER RUNNERS are always very envious of younger runners’ ability to run fast times. Age-graded times actually do approximate the times most older runners ran in their 20’s and early 30’s, so it is a fair system to use.
