Race notes: Abby said pre-race she hadn’t been running that much lately; John Joyce was FTLY by :19; Darlene Dearden was just 6 seconds from winning a trophy for 3rd in age group, and her mile pace in this 5 miler was only ONE SECOND slower that in her New Year’s Day 5K, so…must be improving! Esther Powell is still
coming back from giving birth; Vernon Turner was only a day off a long training run for Boston; Rebecca White ran her first GP race of this Series; Jim Finn (FTLY by 1:02, successfully “snuck by” me at ~3 miles), was also running his first, and said he’s been running almost every day and doesn’t dare let up; I (Tom A) had run the legs for only 2 days of last 12 due to stitches in back for minor surgery, so was 3 1/2 minutes slower than last year here; Katie Scafidi brought her mother, Mary Blaney-Sullivan (who had run with us in the Strivers 5K 2 years ago), to race with; Mary Tyler, despite some recent health maladies, picked up her 2nd consecutive (3rd?) trophy for 2nd woman over 70; and Ted – 4 seconds behind – made sure she kept going! Best “fellow runner support award” should go to Abby and John for coming back after finishing and “escorting/exhorting” me to run faster the last half mile. (It really helped!) Vernon and Abby later took some nice post-race photos of us.
“FTLY” means Faster Than Last Year at this race.

There are maybe GFRC finishers that I didn’t notice on the first scan-through. Racewire doesn’t include town/city names (even though it does on the printout at the race), so that makes it harder to narrow down who’s a GFRC member.  Tell us at GrandPrix “at” gfrcrun.org if you were in this but not listed above.

Race Notes: Edw Ginsberg lives nearby and runs here often – but he didn’t use any shortcuts that we know of! Abby McCabe has been doing Wednesday Bowditch workouts whenever it’s open and getting in 7-milers on Sundays – but missed both with this past week’s weather. Susin Carlson did fine despite being in heavy marathon training. Esther Powell is on the comback trail and was 17 secs better here than on New Year’s Day. Mary Bahl started way back among the 10-minute crowd for some reason, then really turned it on, averaging 9:12’s. I was happily surprised when belatedly awarded my last year’s 3rd place Cancer Survivor’s trophy – complete with a generous Marathon Sports gift certificate. Katie (nee Sullivan) Scafidi is back racing with us again! (had been last seen at the Larry Olsen 10K) Ted & Mary Tyler had just gotten back from racing in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 65-degree race temps. Ted told Edw Ginsberg prerace, “I’m going to pass you in this!” But Edw never saw Ted pass at only 1/4 mile into the race. Sneaky! Karen Bilodeau was a minute faster than in her New Year’s 5K. Mike Carlson took some good group photos.

Upton State Forest 10.5K & Half Marathon

November 11, 2018

The Upton State Forest Trail race runs through the scenic Upton State Forest (surprise!). Part of the MRA series, this is probably the least challenging of their trail races. A slightly over 6 mile loop is run once for the 10.5k and twice for the half marathon. This year the race kicked off with Eric Jacobsen’s impression of Steve Galloway singing the National Anthem. If you weren’t there you missed out! The weather was beautiful for a fall trail run and great for a November day — This year was a beautiful 34 degree day with clear skies. The soup afterward was a great way to warm up!

– POINTS for ONLY ONE GP RACE per MONTH are counted towards your total; if you run a marathon, half-m, or ultra, then the points for any one of those are to be used IN PLACE of that month’s GP race points – unless that race’s pts are higher.
– Age-graded time is done for the exact year (with 2 decimal positions) of racer’s age, rather than by the 10-year age division the runner is in, calculated on WMA website, choose correct distance (e.g., “5 mile road” if a road, not track, race); fill in other appropriate fields, separating hours, minutes and seconds by colons; Ages are calculated to one one-hundredth because there is often such a closeness in age-graded times that a finer age-graded computation than 2-digit ages is more accurate. Plus, you get a faster age-graded time this way!

Notes: John Joyce was faster than last year here by 55 seconds, Bob Cargill by 28 seconds, Darlene Dearden was 6th of 90 in her age group. Others faster too, despite the wind. Watch this page.

GP rules say that points can be waived for someone if he or she requests it. This is done sometimes so that others’ points will be raised.
